Many of my clients come to me to help them discover the root causes of their own triggers, or their child’s unwanted behaviors. When take a deep dive to look under the iceberg we see the thoughts and beliefs that lead to our parenting struggles are often rooted in Shame – the general belief that we don’t deserve easy, connected, safe family systems.
Guilt is the terrible feeling we experience when we make a mistake that needs repair. But Shame is the subconscious belief that there is something inherently wrong with us, we are not enough, and unworthy of connection and ease. These beliefs are often rooted in our childhood learning, and stopping the shame cycle between parents and children is one of the reasons I find mindful parenting so important.
