Nighttime fears are tough for both kids and parents. As much as we want to make everything better in the moment, it’s often not the best time to dive into what’s scaring them. Here’s how you can support your child through nighttime fears and help them feel safe in their own bed.
When your child wakes up scared, it’s tempting to ask what frightened them, but nighttime isn’t the best time to unpack those feelings. Instead, reassure them by saying, “We can talk about it in the morning. Right now, I’m here to remind you that you’re safe.” Focus on helping them feel cozy and calm in their bed—whether it’s cuddling with a favorite stuffed animal or taking a few deep breaths.
During the day, when they’re more relaxed, is the perfect time to ask about their fears. Gently ask questions like, “What scared you last night?” or “What was the hardest part about it?” This opens up the conversation in a safe space, helping you understand what’s going on in their mind without the pressure of nighttime anxiety.
Let them know that fear is a normal part of life and that everyone feels scared sometimes. A simple “It’s okay to be afraid. Everyone feels scared at times, and I’m here with you” can make a big difference. It reassures them that they’re not alone in their feelings.
Teach them simple ways to calm themselves down at night. Whether it’s deep breathing, imagining a safe place, or holding their favorite comfort object, giving them tools to manage their emotions helps them feel more in control.
